Best CBD Oil for Anxiety and Depression: What’s CBD Oil?

CBD is the shortened name for a cannabinoid found in the cannabis and hemp plants. The full name is Cannabidiol – pronounced Ca-Na-Bi-Di-Ol.

It is one of over 400 known chemical compounds that naturally occur in the cannabis and hemp plant. The CBD is extracted and then mixed with a carrier oil (usually hemp or coconut oil) to create CBD oil.

You can take it in many forms – smoke it, vape it, put a drop under your tongue, take it in capsule form, use oral sprays, use a topical cream, eat it as part of a treat, and the list goes on…

CBD is not psychoactive and you won’t feel “high” when you take it, unlike its counterpart Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Pure CBD will also not show up in a drug test, in case you’re worried about anything like that!

A Short History

Best CBD Oil for Anxiety ~ Professor Raphael Mechoulam, Oct 2012
Prof. Raphael Mechoulam

The use of medical marijuana has been mentioned in Egyptian ancient texts dating back to 1550BC.

It wasn’t until1940 that Roger Adams was able to isolate CBD from the cannabis plant, even though he wasn’t really sure at that stage what it was that he had found. It was only in 1963 that Professor Raphael Mechoulam uncovered the chemical structure of CBD, and has since become known as the Godfather of CBD and THC.

Dr. Walter S. Loewe was the first person to conduct a CBD test on lab animals, back in 1946, and reported that no significant change in behavior was detectable in mice as compared to its counterpart THC.

Since those discoveries, the CBD and medical marijuana industries have made tremendous growth with almost all states in the U. S, and many countries worldwide,  now having passed legislation on the legalization of these products.

As the stigma surrounding CBD starts to disappear, you will start to come across more and more CBD based products such as CBD oil, CBD water, CBD lotions, CBD tablets, etc. Even though scientific research is scarce, all of these products are used to effectively treat conditions such as anxiety, pain, insomnia, epilepsy, depression, inflammation, to name but a few!

The Legality Matter

The legality of CBD in the USA is in a grey area at the moment.

As long as your CBD product does NOT contain THC, it falls outside of the scope of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency Controlled Substances act. This makes the product legal to sell and to consume.

Should your CBD be extracted from a cannabis plant that does contain other substances, and it contains less than 0.3% THC, it may be illegal on the federal level, but could be legal under state law… So confusing, if you ask me.

As a CBD company, you are obviously also not allowed to make any unproven health claims about the substance. This prevents people who have a real medical need from not getting the necessary treatment they actually need.

If you’re living in the U.K. CBD is also completely legal IF it has been taken from a hemp strain that is EU-approved and they contain very little (no more than 0.2%) to no THC at all.

There is one exception though, as a product called Sativex (containing 50/50 mixture of CBD and THC) has been approved and legalized in the UK as a treatment for multiple sclerosis.

Specialist clinicians are also allowed to prescribe medicine derived from other cannabis products, since November 2018.

CBD oil may also be perfectly legal in any other country in the world. South Africa, for instance, has legalized Marijuana for private use since March 2017, thus making all CBD products legal.

CBD is also legal in the following countries (please let us know if you know of any other countries or if the list needs editing):

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • Chile
  • Colombia
  • Denmark
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Israel
  • Italy
  • Peru
  • Poland
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • The Netherlands

Before starting to use CBD oil, make sure that you familiarize yourself with the laws surrounding this substance in your country.

Using CBD Oil for Anxiety

Although research around using CBD oil for anxiety and other mental or emotional health-related issues are still far and few, and with most done on animals, the studies that have been done highlights much positivity and many benefits surrounding using CBD for anxiety.

CBD interacts with your body’s endocannabinoid system and specifically impacts the brain’s CB1 receptors.

These are the same receptors that most anxiety medications interact with as well.

So, you get the benefit of modern medication, but without the nasty side effects that accompany many of them.

The substance is able to combine with your serotonin receptors (specifically 5-HT1A), the same receptors that are also targeted by SSRI’s. CBD boosts the signals to these receptors, increasing the transmission of 5-HT1A, and helps to affect mood faster and safer than traditional SSRI’s.

CBD oil can be beneficial for a variety of anxiety related disorders, such as:

Important: If you want to start using CBD to help with your anxiety, talk it over with your doctor or health care provider. It may be that some of the medication you are already on, will have to be stopped and you can be guided on the correct dosages needed for your specific condition.

Using CBD Oil for Depression

As with anxiety, there is quite a wide range of treatments available for depression. This may include medications, psychotherapy, TMS treatments, bright-light therapy, or a combination thereof.

Although CBD does not cure depression, it will certainly help to improve and alleviate your symptoms.

CBD modulates the actions of endocannabinoids produced naturally in your body and it also helps to enhance the activity of receptors to which serotonin binds. When this happens, you will experience the calming and relaxing effects of this treatment.

Depression is not only a chemical imbalance in your brain. When people suffer from depression, a certain region of the brain can start to deteriorate and even shrink! This area is the hippocampus or the area that is responsible for memory, learning, and emotions. Medication is then taken to help rebuild this part of the brain, hence some depression medication could take weeks before you feel it starting to work – healing takes time.

What CBD does is it actually protects and helps to regenerate all the neurons in the hippocampus, as seen with evidence derived from both human and animal research.

CBD will also increase your BDNF protein levels which encourages the growth of new neurons and synapses.

CBD shouldn’t be seen as a “quick fix” for your depression or anxiety, but incorporating it as part of your long-term recovery plan should prove to be very useful and beneficial to you in the long run.

Important: If you want to start using CBD to help with your anxiety or depression, talk it over with your doctor or health care provider. It may be that some of the medication you are already on, will have to be stopped or can interfere with the CBD. By consulting with your doctor you can be guided on the correct dosages needed for your specific condition and also discuss any other concerns you or they may have.

Dosages and Side Effects

A Spread of Cannabis

As far as dosages are concerned, it is always best to work on this together with your health care provider as dosages are dependent on your weight, age, medical conditions, genetics, etc.

It is recommended to start off with a fairly low dosage and then slowly building up to higher dosages over the span of a few weeks. It is most effective when you use it regularly in specifically maintained dosages.

You should start feeling the effects and improvements brought on by CBD after about 90 minutes of ingesting the compound.

For acute flare-ups, you can vaporize CBD for quicker relief, but the maintenance dosages should still be continued.

CBD is not psychoactive or addictive in any way.

According to, the majority of CBD oil users (and there are millions around the world) do not experience any negative side effects to this form of treatment. Many extensive reviews and reports have also revealed that CBD has a rather low level of toxicity and has been found safe with little to no bad effects.

One of the more common side effects you may experience is “dry mouth”. You can easily handle that by lowering the dose, chewing some gum or sipping some water regularly. Stay away from caffeine and alcohol, though, and try not to smoke while you are experiencing “dry mouth”.

Some other effects that may be experienced if your dosage is too high are dizziness and nausea.

CBD oil could interact with certain medications, be it prescribed or over the counter. It is always best to consult with your physician or pharmacist before giving this a go.

Our Recommendations – Best CBD Oils

Because CBD oils are not regulated by government or any third party agencies, it is difficult to know these days which suppliers are trustworthy and “real” with their products.

Being an unregulated substance, this means that you may find a product that contains other ingredients (such as THC), have less CBD than claimed, and even products that claim to contain CBD yet doesn’t contain any at all!

In an interview with Time, Dr. Esther Blessing warned that many of the “CBD oil” products on the market is nothing but snake oil – yuck – so do your research thoroughly…

Things to look out for when you buy your CBD oil

#1. Do Proper Research!

Our number one tip may seem like an “Obvious Bob”, but you will be surprised how many people fall for scammy advertising and “quick fix” promises.

Remember that CBD is not regulated by the government and it is your duty to yourself to do proper research – for your own health’s sake.

Do proper research on the company you are buying from – what do other customers say, is it a reputable company, etc.

Check out their social media accounts, ask for information pamphlets, 3rd party lab reports (this is important), or speak to the distributors directly and make sure that they answer your questions satisfactory.

If you are unable to contact the company directly, AnxietyPanda suggests that you look for another company to buy from.

Check the labels to make sure of the ingredients, the amount of CBD or THC (remember, less than 0.3%) in the product, and how much CBD is contained in the actual dose. This will help with determining the correct dose for your lifestyle.

Don’t believe any bogus claims of miracle cures either. CBD will not cure your cancer, reverse your Alzheimers, or make your wrinkles disappear overnight.

#2. Affordability Doesn’t Equal Quality

There are certain brands that are available for a low cost and they proudly advertise that their CBD is extracted from the seed and the stem of the hemp plant… What they do not tell you is that CBD is not present in hemp seed at all and the stem contains very little, if any CBD.

CBD can be taken as gummy sweets – don’t buy the gummies that are made with corn syrup or artificial colors.

Avoid products labeled “pure CBD” or “no THC”. You want to choose “full spectrum” (including the legal amount of 0.3% THC or less) or “broad spectrum” (contains no THC).

You also want to avoid isolated or distilled products. There’s not much goodness left in those and if extraction is not done properly, you may end up with a product containing much higher levels of THC or other substances than advertised.

When it comes to the extraction method, be on the lookout for products that were extracted using CO2 extraction. It is the most expensive of the extraction methods, however, you will be assured of high quality, pure, and safe CBD oil. The next best thing to this is Olive Oil or Cold Pressed extraction, but the yields are incredibly low.

Absolutely avoid any products that were extracted using Dry Ice extraction or Solvent-based extraction.
You will receive low quality and potentially dangerous (think lighter fluid) CBD oil.

What a fascinating article. With the legalisation of cannabis in many countries, it is bound to be a controversial topic. It certainly has got many beneficial uses and is no longer only a “hippy” drug. This article has opened my eyes to many of the alternative uses for CBD oil

  10. Marshall Marshall

Thank you for this write up. It’s great to know that CBD can be used to treat some medical issues. I’m really concern about using it to manage depression, it’s great. Since it’s used medically, how will a doctor know the exact dosage needed for the depression. And also for such product without regulations how can we know the exact content we have in it.

    • AnxietyPanda AnxietyPanda

Hi Marshall, thank you for commenting.

Doctors study human physiology etc so they will look at your weight, height, other medical conditions, etc to determine which dose would be good for you.
To ensure that you receive a quality product and that it’s content is safe, always ask the company you want to buy from for their 3rd Party Lab results which will break down the contents of the product.  If they are legit, they should be able to provide you with it without a problem. If not, find another place to buy from.

Anxiety and depressionalike are two serious mental state we suffer from time to time. 17. Chris Chris

I never really thought about using a CBD product for handling my anxiety before, but I suppose on some level it does make a degree of sense.

The only worry I would have is the possible side effects of paranoia linked to certain CBD oils (there have been numerous articles on this subject recently in the news). Is this a problem with certain oils and do you feel it could work against the anxiety problems faced?

    • AnxietyPanda AnxietyPanda

      Hi Chris,

You raise a valid question. Always remember that a Full- or Broadspectrum CBD oil will definitely not cause any side effects such as paranoia. Those types of side-effects usually happen when there are other substances, such as an excess of THC added to the product. These types of products are also not legal.  THC is the compound in cannabis that makes one “high”, and thus also cause some of the mentioned side-effects you might have been reading about.

CBD oil, in it’s true form and purchased from a reputable company can be considered very safe. Always do your research, and be sure to check the labels of the products you want to purchase. Asking the company for 3rd Party Lab reports are also always a great idea as it will give you the chance to make sure that you’re getting the “real deal”.

  18. Josie Josie

Great write up! I loved the story of the history of medical marijuana, and how you delved into the legality. I have only just started my research into CBD (albeit for my dog with neuro issues, GAD and OCD) but this article has given me such a great start. Thank you!

    • AnxietyPanda AnxietyPanda

      You’re welcome, Josie!
Good luck and much love to the pooch

One of your cautions was to always do research. I’m in 100% agreement here even if the product were regulated by the government, since who’s not to say some government official isn’t ‘in house’ with the company, something that happens in many industries left and right.

I’m one who always conducts research before buying, simply because I want the best product at the best price. Not just this, the more research we do on different brand names, regulated or not, the better informed we the people will be when it comes to purchasing the right products from the right companies, forcing the less honest companies to comply or else they will fold.

I’ve always been one to tell others to engage in their own research, even these days in an era the majority of the population expects others to do research for them. Never do this; instead, research a product, any product, before buying, and it will allow your honest companies to prevail.

    • AnxietyPanda AnxietyPanda

      I absolutely agree!

  20. Sammynathaniels Sammynathaniels

I’ve known Cannabidiol oil (CBD oil) for a while now but I never knew it can be used to treat depression and anxiety. As a matter of fact I usually use it for hair related treatments and other skin problems but I’ve never thought it could be helpful in dealing with depression even though I knew it has a lot of health benefits. I’ll do more research on this. Thanks a million

    • AnxietyPanda AnxietyPanda

      You’re welcome!

  21. Michel Michel

I had absolutely no idea that CBD oils could help for anxiety and depression, although I know that they have a multitude of other uses and healing properties.

Interesting that pure CBD oil doesn’t show up in a drug test. This could be very encouraging for athletes to know.

As you also warned, it is always a good idea to check with your doctor first before hopping on the bandwagon and trying to treat yourself.

    • AnxietyPanda AnxietyPanda

      Hi Michel 🙂

I love your comment regarding athletes!
CBD is also known as an effective pain killer and especially help relieve muscle pain or stiff joints from exercise. It can also help to relieve inflammation.
